At Rec Pier, Sagamore Pendry Baltimore Hotel Opens Its Doors

In March 2017, after more than a year of refurbishment and reconstruction, the Sagamore Pendry Baltimore Hotel opened on the site of Recreation Pier in the Fell’s Point neighborhood of Baltimore.

Built in 1914, the Rec Pier holds a prominent place in Baltimore’s history. Rec Pier served as a landing point for immigrants entering Baltimore and Fells Point was home to a vibrant immigrant community. Today, the pier adjacent to Sagamore Pendry contains 10,000 engraved bricks which commemorate the immigrants who traveled through Rec Pier.

When the project started, construction teams quickly discovered that the Pier had decayed to the point that it could not withstand any new development and was sinking into the water. Sagamore Development Company undertook an incredible engineering effort to build a new pier above the existing pier, anchoring the existing one to the new structure. This effort ensured the pier would not fall into the harbor, polluting the water with building materials and damaging the structural integrity of the pier.

As of March 2017, Sagamore Pendry Baltimore had hired 204 employees, 132 of which are from Baltimore City. During construction, 937 total workers contributed to the development logging nearly 620,000 man hours.

The Sagamore Pendry Baltimore was developed in collaboration between Montage International and Sagamore Development Company, owned by Kevin Plank, founder, chairman and CEO of Under Armour.
